Like It Or Not, Here Comes the New Facebook
mashable.com — Despite statistics indicating that many users who migrate over to the new Facebook design are reverting back to the old, all signs point to the imminent launch of redesign.
- 1716 diggs
- digg it
- fl00d, on 09/05/2008, -103/+602The new design is fine. Make with the change already.
- smokingmole, on 09/05/2008, -20/+11agreed
- wastern, on 09/06/2008, -12/+293Indeed. The new design takes all the bull ***** and throws it in a tab I never need to look at. I don't want to scroll through 2 dozen apps about zombies and bumper stickers to get to the wall or photos.
Its much more efficient this way. Facebook was starting to look like myspace with all the apps, the new design stops that.
Most people don't like change because they are lazy and don't want to learn a new place to click. Take 5 minutes and look around, its not that complex of a site from a navigation standpoint. Its the same reason why a lot of people don't want to upgrade to a new OS at most workplaces, non-IT people can't handle change in technology. It has to be forced sooner or later, might as well get it over with- lemur, on 09/06/2008, -1/+65Well that's the thing... the majority of people aren't happy unless they can make their pages look like crap because somehow that expresses their personality. Facebook is only doing the responsible thing and trying to make people look less stupid than Myspace does.
- FTLJohnson, on 09/06/2008, -24/+13Actually, as someone who doesn't like the change, It's not because I have to make another click, it's because most other people WON'T make that extra click 99% of the time. Although I'm not an application developer, if I were, and had been working on apps that work through facebook, I would be particularly PISSED OFF. Many facebook applications now will never, or rarely ever even get seen, and good ones won't spread nearly as quickly because of this fact, regardless of how useful they are.
I do loathe the spamming incessant stupidity of some of the social games, and sharing lame virtual gardens, and pets, quizzes and what not, but individual expression is exactly what some of those things are about.
I LIKE displaying my favorite movies, or pictures directly from my flickr or youtube feeds right on my profile. I don't want that segregated to a separate tab, because they are a part of what I feel makes my profile interesting. If I wanted a boring text only style profile I would send people to my LinkedIn profile.
I want to display current MEDIA from various areas of my life on my profile, and don't want that kicked in the teeth and downgraded to just text.
Your analogy about upgrading is totally inaccurate, a change from a media and application driven profile to a text based one, is like an 'upgrade' from OSX to MSDOS. It makes me want to write a batch file for my proverbial facebook profile analogy that says "deltree C:\*.* /y" - Groady, on 09/06/2008, -17/+6Agree 100% with FTLJohnson. As someone who has toiled with developing a Facebook application having them all pushed onto their own tab is very strange. Especially since Facebook tries to promote it's application framework as the greatest thing since sliced bread. I would have thought having the applications front and center.
- drewbe121212, on 09/06/2008, -1/+29Wait? A slow down in annoying applications! Thank god!!
- GiphLag, on 09/06/2008, -2/+6FTLJohnson,
I agree with you on your first part, but the part about a text-only profile couldn't be further from the truth. I'm not sure what you're doing but I have no problem posting pictures, links, videos, etc. to my main profile page. It even lets me set how much I want to show. Just a line, some of it, or all of it.
Maybe you should click around some more. - xister, on 09/06/2008, -0/+24No offense developer guys and app lovers, but I go on Facebook to communicate with friends, not "own" someone, or send them some stupid ass "item of the week". I have very few frivolous apps and intend to keep it that way. When it comes down to it, there are *very few* useful apps and they sure as hell don't replace good old fashioned typing out a message to someone.
Having said that, I wish that the first thing you would see when you go to someone's page (in the new setup) would be their info instead of their newsfeed. I think that would be a better intro to a person you might have just befriended. - Teej, on 09/06/2008, -3/+9I completely disagree about this being a more efficient layout. The new wall is a disaster. Information that used to be in several panes is all thrown into one by default, creating clutter, making it more difficult to quickly grab specific information.
There's a lot of white space wasting space between items, and a bizarre font size difference for personal status updates.
I have to click a button now to give me an old style wall, and that takes over the whole page taking all the other information with it needing another click to get back.
Wall posts from friends are now on individual blue backgrounds making them harder to read! Who the hell thought that was a good idea? Are the Facebook design team using their screens on full brightness and contrast?
I'm not opposed to change, I love new *****, but when there are such glaring problems that I am able to notice after 30 seconds of usage, it's unacceptable. The only saving grace is getting other people's apps out of my face. - ichbeineinrcg, on 09/06/2008, -6/+1I'm with the haters, here. My new Facebook page looks like a ***** Twitter. Putting all the apps on one page is pointless. The new layout is ugly as hell.
Terrible, terrible change. - UNL1M1T3D, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I hated it at first, but after giving it some time I have actually gotten used to it. I have my gripes (I used to like how they handled posting links and embedded stuff in the old model) but all in all the changes are nice.
- faatbuddha, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3FTL Johnson: I have my movies and music on my main page still. You can have certain boxes on your main page, if you want. Updates to your Flickr and YouTube accounts can be automatically posted to your profile.
- Spo8, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2"Its much more efficient this way. Facebook was starting to look like myspace with all the apps, the new design stops that."
Couldn't have said it better myself. - fjf314, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1I personally loved the new layout as soon as I first used it. Everything else aside, the simple fact that the majority of the garbage from applications is no longer readily visible makes me think it's great. The applications that people move to the Wall tab typically don't have a lot of space to work with and are kept to a minimum. It's nice to be able to looks at a person's Facebook profile and actually SEE the Wall instead of hunting everywhere for it.
- StultusJuventus, on 09/06/2008, -20/+10no it isnt!
- Zapkiller, on 09/06/2008, -6/+3Lies
- roodammy44, on 09/06/2008, -14/+8The problem is that you have to click more rather than scroll.
The pages look duller again.
How many people on digg have complained "Why is it not all on one page" about other sites- captlen, on 09/06/2008, -2/+12But on other sites you have to click a lot more times than on the new facebook. It is also a lot better to have less of the clutter, as I was getting fed up with the zombies and vampires etc!
- Iwantawii, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6But the new facebook has way more posts per wall shown on a single page than the old. See for yourself
- kokuei, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7@roodammy44: Yeah when it's good content, we want it all on one page. When it's your ***** facebook apps, we'd rather skip it.
- Mononuclear, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1We want all the relevant info on one page. We don't want the entire site on one page. If a website put 5 or 6 unrelated articles all on one page and the article we wanted was halfway down the page we would complain. If I want someone's wall I don't want it with their photos or a map of places they have been.
I hate facebook apps so I love the new design because I never have to click the tab with what Disney character they are. I don't care. If I did care I could easily click that tab. - OomBok, on 09/06/2008, -1/+1+1
- linkerm, on 09/06/2008, -1/+14It's ok -- took a little getting used to, but I like the tab design.
- exformation, on 09/06/2008, -9/+30the minifeed is the worst feature ever. why they would integrate it into the wall is beyond me.
/registered for facebook back when you needed a .edu email address- Memnochxx, on 09/06/2008, -3/+34I WAS ON FACEBOOK WHEN IT WAS STILL UNDERGROUND
- afidler, on 09/06/2008, -1/+20I WENT TO COLLEGE
- mCanada, on 09/06/2008, -4/+4/REGISTERED FOR FACEBOOK WHEN YOU STILL HAD TO SEND NAKED PICS TO A .RU EMAIL ADDRESS TO GAIN ACCESS.
- kinseyincanada, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3it makes it look like Twitter with all the status updates.
- thenumber8, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2the minifeed is what makes facebook their money though -- it keeps people on the site longer which is a determining factor in how they receive marketing dollars
- Teej, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2The minifeed integration with the wall is a JOKE. Aren't companies like this supposed to have usability experts okaying new designs? The HUGE font used for my own status updates, the blue background on the wall posts...what the hell are they smoking over there? Change for change's sake does NOT result in a good product.
- KirbyMeister, on 09/06/2008, -4/+3Last time I tried the new design it wouldn't work in Chrome. None of the javascript would work; I couldn't switch back to the old design, add an application tab, or even add an application at all. I had to go back to Firefox to use the old design. (I reported it as a bug, of course.) I don't know if it's still broken, I don't feel like going back to New Facebook but I still would much rather Facebook Classic.
- DarknessGP, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5and? Chrome is a newly released BETA browser... Maybe it's Google's javascript engine not working properly.
- mhockey14221, on 09/06/2008, -3/+5I think the problem is the people who spend WAY too much time facebooking, then when the new site comes along they seize the opportunity to make groups like "THE NEW FACEBOOK SUX TO 1 MILLION" groups and have a seratonin rush for a few minutes while validating their popularity. And it's also hip to bash the new facebook, don't get me started on that!
- Tddupre, on 09/06/2008, -6/+7Change we can believe in.
- Tyrghast, on 09/06/2008, -8/+3The new design is good. The old design is better.
- dobry, on 09/06/2008, -2/+6I actually just started using facebook, unaware of the "old" version. I'm fairly impressed with the way it currently works and have not had any problems using the interface whatsoever. I never used it before because I simply thought it was a myspace knockoff and I'm not particularly impressed with myspace. But again, after using it, I actually enjoy it. I've found long lost friends from many years ago.
- horsepie, on 09/06/2008, -2/+1Their placement of whitespace is awful, especially because they're sticking to the constraints of the current design for the new one. The right hand column on the main page, for example, is wider than any of the content and it just looks odd and unblanced.
- guitarbobby, on 09/06/2008, -3/+4Word. The new style is awesome. All of you who want the "old design" are just trying to hang on to nostalgia (which can't happen). You might as well try to re-nominate W for President again (which can't happen).
- troymccluresf, on 09/06/2008, -2/+3You'll get over it.
- beerock, on 09/05/2008, -26/+59self-destructing in 5.. 4.. 3.. 2..
- tonicboy, on 09/06/2008, -3/+24*phew* it's a good thing the countdown stopped. must have been a dud bomb.
in other news, i missed anything in the article indicating "Despite statistics indicating that many users who migrate over to the new Facebook design are reverting back to the old". the Compete stats show that 65% of users are using the new layout, which is a huge majority.
http://blog.compete.com/2008/09/03/facebook-new-ol ...- tonicboy, on 09/06/2008, -8/+1My bad, I see that 40% of users are going back to the old, which is still a large majority using it exclusively. Clearly Facebook users have voted and like the new layout.
- captZEEbo, on 09/06/2008, -0/+860% is not a very big number. You have to do SOMETHING to get the old, many people are plain ignorant or lazy when it comes to computer tweaking type stuff. To have 40% migrate back is a HUGE red flag.
- RetepNamenots, on 09/06/2008, -2/+7@tonicboy: That 60% is only made up of the people who _chose_ to try the new facebook in the first place.
I hated it, personally. - unfinite, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2But you know at least half of that 65% is just too dumb to figure out how to get back to the old facebook.
- postvivace, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I guess they don't feel like they need to feel consumer demand because hey have such a monopoly (you could try to argue that myspace is competition, but trust me, it's no substitute for facebook users). I doubt that people will actually delete their accounts in protest, though.
- tonicboy, on 09/06/2008, -3/+24*phew* it's a good thing the countdown stopped. must have been a dud bomb.
- Jimbozu, on 09/05/2008, -9/+33I like everything about the new design except for the solid white background. It just doesn't look like Facebook anymore without that blue stripe in the middle of my screen.
- royalwcheese, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9I love the new feed, and the ability to comment on status. Less emphasis on the pirate versus ninja app is always a good thing.
- championchap, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Agreed, a little extra flair would be nice.
- VonBargenJL, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3anyone notice some links dont work with chrome?? i cant even get the link to 'back to the old facebook' to work in chrome..
- Twee, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I noticed that too in Firefox when I had adblock plus enabled. I disabled adblock plus and it fixed everything. So there are definitely some bugs to be worked out.
- efitz11, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2my facebook works fine in firefox with adblock plus
- DinosaurDerek, on 09/05/2008, -35/+89NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

- UltramegaOK, on 09/05/2008, -69/+176.edu > Public
Facebook has turned into Myspace. College students, like myself, want a place where we don't have the retardation (Zombieapps) and frequent scrutiny that goes along with a completely "public" networking site.
Facebook should launch another site ONLY for colleges and universities again.- tonicboy, on 09/06/2008, -13/+243Right. Because if it was just College students, the retardation would completely disappear. I mean, we all know that the college users never forward apps to their friends and are the most mature group of people on Facebook.
- opticwind, on 09/06/2008, -7/+10I see your (valid) point but it would at least be reduced.
- 808ethan, on 09/06/2008, -4/+7"College Student" is a suprisingly broad term. That includes liberal arts majors, failing students, billingual kids getting a degree in the ***** language they grew up speaking, etc. If you want to inflate your statistic, you can even include widows that take 1 class a year about movie culture, just to keep active.
The real truth is only a small fraction of all College Students are studying something that likely leads to a career.
This is how we get the factoid "more women are in college than men" and never get the factoid on what they are studying. - aud24, on 09/06/2008, -3/+7I go to college and I'm retarded.
- algo, on 09/06/2008, -2/+34why do people always harp on about facebook before it went public? how the hell are they supposed to make any money from just students?
- timpkmn89, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5If they supported less people, then there would be less resources used, and less money spent.
- VirgilNilson, on 09/06/2008, -13/+56Really it should just be for Harvard, Yale, Princeton and MIT students to keep out the filth.
- kss42, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Mmm, that's good arugula.
- bryceman111, on 09/06/2008, -7/+6Keep IN the filth?
burn. - fakekevinrose, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Really it should just be for honors students
- bpmox, on 09/06/2008, -3/+1Then only friend Ivy League students. Nobody is making you be friends with that "filth".
- aud24, on 09/06/2008, -3/+3Yea let's get rid of all the unattractive people while we're at it- hey let's try Lebensborn Facebook edition. (this was a joke)
- jave8u, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1You're smart for someone who probably doesn't go to any of those schools.
- Erectile, on 09/06/2008, -21/+10Make your own site, *****.
- Anteros, on 09/06/2008, -1/+96What difference does facebook being open to the public make? You still choose who goes on your friends list, it's your friends sending the zombie invitations.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 09/06/2008, -2/+7You, sir, just said the most logical thing I have heard/read all day long. I applaud you.
- jcaino, on 09/06/2008, -1/+86Its been said a million times, and I'll say it again - you know you CAN block applications, right?
- drewbe121212, on 09/06/2008, -0/+10Exactly. I am happy they released it to the public. I have many friends to whom I left behind when I went and graduated college. I still use face book to keep in touch with them from time to time. Or, at the very least can figure out what their phone number is for a quick call.
- toph2223, on 09/06/2008, -0/+14it's not a completely public app. you have to be a member of someone's network or their friend in order to view their page.
- toph2223, on 09/06/2008, -3/+6it's not a completely public site... you have to be a member of someone's network or friends list in order to view their page...
- mhockey14221, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Huh? Just do what I did, block absolutely everything from everyone except your friends (and maybe your .edu network). Simple. Also, there's a way to block app requests from apps you don't have.
I haven't had one lousy friend or ***** app request in weeks! - theOster, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6i'll leave facebook if the college kids leave my apartment building.
also from the "i'm so totally digitally close to you article":
"All day long, they’d post “status” notes explaining their moods — “hating Monday,” “skipping class b/c i’m hung over.” After each party, they’d stagger home to the dorm and upload pictures of the soused revelry, and spend the morning after commenting on how wasted everybody looked."
classic. - MScrip, on 09/06/2008, -2/+3Ummmm... I know lots of college students who insist on installing tons of apps and click "invite all" on each app.
It seems like the apps are the problem... not the age of the people installing them.
And what does it matter if Facebook is open to the public? On the old Facebook, you could only see profiles from people at your college... you know, in your network. Someone from another college couldn't see your profile, and you couldn't see theirs. The whole point of Facebook is to invite friends you actually know.
I don't care if there's only 100,000 college students on Facebook, or 1,000,000 people in general. I'm only Facebook friends with the couple hundred people I actually know. - dobry, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Perhaps you should choose better friends?
- tdilworth, on 09/06/2008, -2/+2facebook lost it's exclusiveness. And that's what made it so special.
- PabloPowell, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2What would you do after college? Use LinkedIn to post drunkin' party pictures?
- Twee, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Who uses LinkedIn?
- Syphon8, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5It should be only university. 'Cause college isn't serious enough.
- solid12345, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4We need an alternative to facebook for millionaire business men who dropped out of college to be successful.
- theOster, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1fancy restaurants and high end strip clubs :)
- dkol97, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I'm just pissed because now I have to worry about what photos are tagged of me. I don't know precisely what companies/employers deem inappropriate. It was nice when companies didnt have their own damn networks. Ridiculous
- Ismation, on 09/06/2008, -2/+0"I don't know precisely what companies/employers deem inappropriate"
If you truly don't know, then how do you expect to conduct yourself in a professional situation? The first time your office team goes out for drinks, are you really going to get hammered, take off your pants and lick the bar for a free shot?
You have bigger concerns than pictures on the internet my friend. - dkol97, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1You my friend are an idiot. Different employers have different standards. If you couldn't figure THAT out then you will have even bigger problems than me.
- Ismation, on 09/06/2008, -2/+0"I don't know precisely what companies/employers deem inappropriate"
- bpmox, on 09/06/2008, -1/+0Ultramega, if that's what you want then don't friend people that aren't in college. I can't believe people are digging up your ridiculous suggestion.
- Kinsbane, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Revenue > Joe-Schmoe's social networking needs.
- tonicboy, on 09/06/2008, -13/+243Right. Because if it was just College students, the retardation would completely disappear. I mean, we all know that the college users never forward apps to their friends and are the most mature group of people on Facebook.
- svivian, on 09/05/2008, -15/+65I like the new design. Apart from the "apps" tab, everything looks really clean and organised. Apps is like the myspace tab.
- opticwind, on 09/06/2008, -0/+10"like myspace"
That's why. - darneveryone, on 09/06/2008, -3/+3But isn't it better than having all the apps on the main pages of people's profiles? I think it reduces the app clutter.
- svivian, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2That's exactly what I said.
- opticwind, on 09/06/2008, -0/+10"like myspace"
- sexysaxplayer, on 09/05/2008, -5/+45I have to admit, I really like the new design and am finding that it eliminates a lot of that Zombieapp clutter. BUT I'm really surprised that they'd go so far as to force it on users that have already opted out. I think it's a bad move.
- royalwcheese, on 09/06/2008, -2/+8If you wait around to long you end up like myspace. So ***** that there is no turning back the clock.
- Tommydukes, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1top right link brings you back to the original verison of Facebook
that basically turns back the clock
- Tommydukes, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1top right link brings you back to the original verison of Facebook
- say592, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1It was never something that you could opt in or out of.
They made it very clear to those who were following, and contributing ideas, that the switch would come, and it would be for all users. At one time they went as far as to remind people that this is how it will be. If you dont like it, speak up about what you want changed.
I think that the group accomplished alot. It went from being overly complicated to getting it to a design that *most* people in the group really, really liked, myself included.
The people that are complaining now are
A: new users (which is BS) complaining because other people are doing it
B: People who never bothered to speak up, or follow the changes. If you have that much interest in a site, I would think you would be checking the official blog a few times a month. Since they only constantly talked about it for 8 months, you should have known about it. You should have spoken up.
- royalwcheese, on 09/06/2008, -2/+8If you wait around to long you end up like myspace. So ***** that there is no turning back the clock.
- funkymonkey01, on 09/05/2008, -58/+53I hate the new design. Why did they bother?
- interad, on 09/05/2008, -4/+39this is going to drive the more clueless FB users insane when they make the switch
- royalwcheese, on 09/06/2008, -0/+12Another plus?
- jperson, on 09/06/2008, -0/+16Is there a way to watch them?
- xister, on 09/06/2008, -1/+9Hopefully they'll get fed up and quit using Facebook.
- CanadaMan87, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3We can only hope.
- Haoie, on 09/06/2008, -10/+61People are just against change. The old design was fine, personally.
- hotpuck6, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2agreed.
It's been the same for 4 years, why change it "just because"?
- hotpuck6, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2agreed.
- Atomic1fire, on 09/06/2008, -3/+8I really don't care whether they change it or not, if people don't like it, Facebook can always make a themes app that lets people go with the old theme, and maybe a few other (specially chosen) themes, with people given the option of blocking themes across all profiles. so that someone elses idea of good looking =clutter, does not effect your idea of good looking, and so that a mobile theme would allow for skimming most info down, and a theme could be made for smaller screens, allowing for face book to please everyone without destroying too much expectations
- Vertex01, on 09/06/2008, -11/+19It annoyed me at first, but I got used to it and came to like, I like to laugh at the facebook group against the redesign, they have no real arguments, they just enjoy raging about it....
- GalacticRerun, on 09/06/2008, -3/+40The new one just doesn't seem to have its parts contained. It feels like it's spilling out. I don't like the wall being included with everything else. But I love the fact that everyone's apps are in a tab that I'll never need to look at. I'm so torn!
- njiska, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2That is precisely my problem. I think the new skin is great but combining the wall and mini-feed is the stupidest thing they could have done. It makes it's an organizational nightmare that makes it impossible for me to easily keep track of conversations and actions. That's the sole reason I won't switch to the new theme. A smarter move for the company would be to make the new one default, but leave the old as an option. 40% of users can't be completely wrong.
- kishosingh, on 09/06/2008, -12/+4I don't like personally because there creates 2 URL for one profile and don't show anything on my profile which I have share for public. There was only my profile image and old URL redirect to new. It is very complicated for me.

- fuzzmeister, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Considering that apps no longer put boxes on your main profile page, junk apps aren't too big a deal anymore.
- lopla, on 09/06/2008, -11/+13It's an improvement imo
- BrokenCircle, on 09/06/2008, -14/+4I'm sorry, when it comes things like Facebook and Myspace... I just can't.

- Jeffler, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2You must be one of "those" - people who would have like 12 friends on their list.
I'm not a huge facebook fan, but I'm a High School Student in Toronto. Toronto and London frequently go back and forth as the two most facebook-saturated cities in the world, and I'd say about 20 people in my school don't have a facebook account (and theres around 1000 people in my school). Even the people who swore off it because they were too cool for it joined this summer. Hell, my brother has an account and he's a 13 year old anti-social nutcase.
So blame Toronto for being lamer than you, I guess. - xister, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Awww- someone doesn't have any friends... :(

- cdneng2, on 09/06/2008, -10/+19The new design gives more space for Ads. It forces you to hit tabs to see 4-5 different ads in the "ad space". What's to like about it?

- MScrip, on 09/06/2008, -0/+18I agree it's different... but on the old Facebook, people's mini-feed was always at the top of their profile, but their Wall was usually buried deep down at the bottom of their profile, past all the zombie apps and other stupid apps.
Everything I need to communicate with friends is now at the top... you can send a message, read their feed or write on the their wall, and view photos without having to see all of the "other" junk.
Facebook went to ***** when the app clutter came... and this fixes it. - fuzzmeister, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7Just click "Posts by Others" to see only wall posts.

Facebook is a social networking website launched on February 4, 2004.[1] The free-access website is privately owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profile to notify friends about themselves. The website's name refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of a campus community that some American colleges and preparatory schools give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus. - jbob2000, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1it's a templar, an amarr fighter drone, used by carriers.
- sentinel106, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1its where u put all ur internets
- johnleemk, on 09/06/2008, -3/+16I originally had a look at the new design and went back to the old. Then a couple of weeks back I figured they'd migrate to the new Facebook eventually anyway, so I forced myself to use the new design. It's actually not bad once you get used to it, although I don't have any problems with the old design.
I have to say, though, not being bombarded with a billion apps when you try to load someone's profile is definitely a good thing. - cloudberries, on 09/06/2008, -4/+12It's (probably*) a scientific fact that people hate change, and when people get used to something looking one way, it takes a massive push to get them to like it looking another way. Fussy buggers that they are
*quite likely that I just made up- doctordbx, on 09/06/2008, -1/+4No you're right, most people are resistant to change.
Change can be good, in fact it can be very good.
But change for the sake of change is rarely a good idea, especially in this instance there has been no new functionality added to the site, and no compelling reason to not stay with the old design. - r3bol, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1If you say the change is improved, its a scientific fact that people are more likely to (think) they like it.
I used to like this can of macaroni cheese before they 'improved' the recipe. Well I really didn't like the new flavor so I compared the ingredients to an old can in the cupboard. The new, improved recipe was the same as the old recipe, but missing mustard. - mrfizzle, on 09/06/2008, -1/+1These new facebook haters are so ***** lazy it amazes me. I hated it at first but it took me around five minutes to get used to it. Its much more organized now and more professional. All that garbage that made it look like myspace is now in one tab that i never have to see.
- doctordbx, on 09/06/2008, -1/+4No you're right, most people are resistant to change.
- notpmoc, on 09/06/2008, -9/+26But I thought all you people liked changed?- (and hope)
- Gardimus, on 09/06/2008, -7/+1I like change, but only in the regressive sense. Facebook should have fewer functions, in fact I would go as far to say it should only display ones name and thats it. Ron Paul 2012!
- Iwantawii, on 09/06/2008, -5/+2Obama is the new Facebook.

- Shadoblak, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1What do YOU mean you people?
- ChrisGray, on 09/06/2008, -3/+46The redesign is all about generating more ad views. Every f--ing thing you do makes the page reload, so that it will show a new advertisement. That is what this is about. It's not about improving the user experience.
- xister, on 09/06/2008, -3/+11(cough)adblock(cough)
And besides that, the ads on Facebook are a lot less obtrusive than any other site I visit. - Daniel591992, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7That's such a lie. Facebook has always put user experience before ad revenue. Just take a look at all the Javascript / AJAX they use. Adding a friend doesn't even require leaving their profile.
- itsripitsrip, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3what's an ad?
- frieddonuts, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5I actually think that is completely and totally wrong. The little red notifications at the bottom that pop up, the embedded friend requests, and the tabs are all indications of a move away from the old myspacey, constant page refreshing design.
Facebook is one of the few sites on the net that avoids annoying banner ads, never putting them at the top of pages and using text w/ small pictures whenever possible. Sorry for sounding like such a Facebook ad myself, but I'm just tired of all of the same comments over and over again.
- xister, on 09/06/2008, -3/+11(cough)adblock(cough)
- algo, on 09/06/2008, -12/+2they should go back to calling it thefacebook.com
/sarcy - MistyEstelle, on 09/06/2008, -3/+24In my opinion the new design looks like crap. More ads, too much white space in weird places, and its weird to navigate. I looked forward to a change and gave it a good honest try, but something about it still irks me. Oh well, I don't use fb all that much anyway, I'll just be using it even less than before now.
- strobe32, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2yea the white space annoys the hell out of me, and it's probably in the top 3 most common complaints... not sure why they haven't/couldn't address it.
- aud24, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1yes and it seems oddly asymmetrical now- which bugs the hell out of me.
- strobe32, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2yea the white space annoys the hell out of me, and it's probably in the top 3 most common complaints... not sure why they haven't/couldn't address it.
- TaylorHelferty, on 09/06/2008, -3/+13I didn't like the design at first, but it grew on me. Most people reverted back after the first day, but like with anything new, try it out for a bit longer and you may start to like it. I enjoy it more than the old one now, I find it much more efficient. Cleaner too.
- nofate2029, on 09/06/2008, -8/+2i like facebook except for the fact that you cant view other peoples pages without being their friend.
i do however like the fact that you can find old buddies from highschool very easily.- jperson, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5I like that privacy feature. I don't want some stranger seeing the details of my life. But yeah, I agree it's great for finding old friends and seeing how they all turned out.
- PawFox, on 09/06/2008, -4/+7I hate the new design - Why I switched back to the old one. - and besides it doesn't work with Opera correctly.
- Setari, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Which part of it doesn't work properly with Opera? I've been using the new design with Opera and the only hiccup I noticed is gone (friends list wasn't loading).
- ZGambit, on 09/06/2008, -2/+1Do you have friends that could be part of the problem..New FB is based on being more social removing the SPaM of having too many apps.
I use opera works just fine 4 me- ichbeineinrcg, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2How can the apps be considered spam, when you're the one who signs up for the apps?
This seems like a case of people getting pissed at how other folks put their pages together and taking it out on the whole damned site. You don't like someone's page, don't friend them. Problem solved. - ZGambit, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1@ichbeineinrcg Yeh Ur right other people signing up on applications is not really SPAM but on the old FB it really did clug up the whole page.
I like my friends so I think I will have to live with Apps, as the New FB is cleaner now I can read my friends comments :P with out scrolling down the page. =D
- ichbeineinrcg, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2How can the apps be considered spam, when you're the one who signs up for the apps?
- Zounas, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I have problems with Opera too. When clicking those "tabs" the page reloads and you can't open other tabs anymore. Besides it's slow as hell to try to use the chat.
- DreadKnight, on 09/06/2008, -6/+5I've never liked the 'old' look so i barely used facebook at all.
I'm going to check the new design right away. It might motivate me into using facebook more.- xsidekick409, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2No, stop, don't. There is no reason you need to use that site.

- Niz1, on 09/06/2008, -4/+8new one sucks, i dont know why they feel the need to fix something that isn't broken same happened to last.fm they changed the interface and i dont know what's what.
- nshady, on 09/06/2008, -8/+2I wish people would stop bitching about it. It's cleaner, and it's easier to see the information you want and get to the places you want to be. It hides all the crap you reluctantly subscribed to away, and the new wall and universal posting box is great.
I made a group about it a while ago if anyone cares: http://tinyurl.com/59l5k2- ichbeineinrcg, on 09/06/2008, -2/+2The wall looks like *****, the stuff you reluctantly subscribed to could have been unsubscribed from, and if by "cleaner" you mean "too much useless white space", then you're correct.
- AlienMushroom, on 09/06/2008, -7/+15Facebook's gonna be worthless in 1 year. Stop and watch :-).
- mrfizzle, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2You're wrong :)
- AlienMushroom, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Look, social network is meant to be a place to get relaxed. All the crap popping up on Facebook is just giving people too much pressure and too many things to deal with, on top of their real life challenges.

- colonels1020, on 09/06/2008, -7/+8I don't get what the big deal is.. I've been using the new facebook since it's been available at new.facebook.com and I haven't really minded the change. Sure, it takes some getting used to, but I've found it easier to use overall. :-)
- helenkupo, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5I went to facebook because the myspace layout of the homepage drove me nuts, especially when it changed to look more facebookish and I missed the simplicity of facebooks home page. Now facebook is going to look more like myspace. Why don't they just merge already?!
Screw it all I'll just stick to flickr and twitter...same difference- MScrip, on 09/06/2008, -2/+1Except, you have to manually find people and tell them how to find your Flickr page. And add them all on Twitter.
The great thing about Facebook is that millions of people are on it, and you can search by name. Or see that your friend has added someone, and you can add them too. Facebook is a directory. It's a place where all your friends are already.
I used to put photos on Flickr, but no one would see them unless I specifically send them an e-mail to go look at my new photos. Now, when I post photos to Facebook, my friends are told that I have new photos in their feed, and they can go look at them. It's that whole "networking" thing.- helenkupo, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Yea well there's some people I don't want to find me on facebook. That's its other downside.
- MScrip, on 09/06/2008, -2/+1Except, you have to manually find people and tell them how to find your Flickr page. And add them all on Twitter.

- Cougarcat, on 09/06/2008, -4/+10Why is the new facebook so goddamn wide??? And for the love of god make an option to make the "info" tab the default. I look at it 99.99% more than the stupid walls.
Facebook was best in its fall 2005 iteration. Everything since then has been downhill.- projectgiggles, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Because if you have a large resolution, the old Facebook was so goddamn narrow!!!
- MScrip, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Yes, it's wider... much like every other site on the web. The old Facebook was too narrow.
The extra width helps when viewing photos too.- Amadeus2490, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1It's probably wider, because people have wide-screen monitors or something.
- Amadeus2490, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1It's probably wider, because people have wide-screen monitors or something.
- qwonkerjawed, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Why can't Facebook allow you to choose which tab you want as the default for visitors to your page? It seems like an insanely simple solution.
- flash2000, on 09/06/2008, -3/+9Yeah, the new design is horrible. What is the point of it?
- masti1234, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9Look, I agree grouping the apps and stuff is a good move alright... but there are still some pretty strange facts about the new facebook as compared to the old one:
1) What did you do to my wall? The wall and the mini-feed should always be seperate.
2)If I am correct I can see the status update of only the last person who updated their status and not the last 3 as in the older facebook.
3)The new facebook is slightly sluggish as compared to the older one because it uses flash(?) which makes it a bit heavy.
also, the settings and privacy are a bit weird and will not take little but a lot of time to used to...
but kudos to many positive changes as well just that the above corrections (if i may say so) need to be made.- masti1234, on 09/06/2008, -1/+0to get used to***
- jackwk, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3there's a tab for recent status updates, recent photos etc..
they change and modify the new layout each day btw, a month ago the new facebook really did suck- marksands07, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1the wall and mini feed can be separate. Sort your feed by All Posts, Post by , Post by Others (this is the wall), or Wall-to-Wall.
Where posts by is usually their status updates and such, and Post By Others IS the wall but without having to scroll down past the mini feed like the old facebook made you do - masti1234, on 09/06/2008, -1/+0and mr marksands, what if I want to just see the mini feed and wall on the same page but seperately? I cant right? Come on we're not that short on space now. The tons of apps are already gone anyway. It is important that the wall is a completely seperate thing. Also when All Posts are showing it is annoying to see random wall posts in the middle of other stories. It just doesn't fit correctly.

- Aeronaught, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9Or maybe it's like going from chocolate chip cookies to oatmeal raisin--some people are inevitably going to like one more than the other, but given enough time no one will give a *****, since cookies are cookies.
